A Last Hurrah!
Griswold Airport closed it's doors (for now, at least) on Sunday, December 31st, 2006.
The CT-PPG'er crowd, along with the GA folks, airport management, numerous members of the
media and spectators, had one final blowout to pay our respects to the airfield we all called
home. Speaking for the PPG/PPC crowd, I would like to thank Loren Baker, Ritchie Tuliano, Doug
Dimio, and certainly Maryanne Griswold for being such great hosts to us over the years, and allowing
us the use of the airport.
Thank you so much for all the great times and memories!
Good Dog, Ben!

Do not leave this man in charge of your airport!
Details are sketchy, but we do know that this mystery "Assistant Night Manager," sillhouted here in an explosion
at Griswold Airport was in charge for no more than seven minutes before all hell broke loose.
Included in the destruction were numerous tires, several lawn chairs, and one old man's out house.
Anyone having information regarding the identity of this rogue airport
employee is requested to contact the appropriate authorities.

The AARP - PPG Club
Dave, Doug, and Ritchie decided to each buy PPG's at the end of the Fall Boogie. They are learning the finer points of kiting
from Stanley and should be in the air very soon. With a combined age older than that of the planet, this should be interesting.

Boogie 2006, What a weekend!!

2006 Fall Boogie comes to a close
What can be said except that this Boogie "had it all!"
Pilots started to arrive on Friday and were greeted by some of the best air and conditions we've seen in a while. After flying till dusk, the camp fire was lit and the "sparks "really started to fly?literally. I'm amazed to find that wood isn't the only thing that burns well in a campfire.
Well, that being said, registration began bright and early the next morning as Dana and I greeted the pilots from around New England, and as far as Delaware and Vermont.
Flying conditions were spectacular all day but at noon, the grills were fired up. We've been told that our fly ins are becoming known for our food and this fly-in was no exception. Pilots and guests were served hot dogs, hamburgers, sausage and peppers, potato salad, tomato salad and corn on the cob, (Thanks Ziggy), other salads, cole slaw, ect.
6 Hours later, the grills were fired up again so this time we could serve up what was to be our Traditional "Clam Bake Theme" Thanks to Steve, Ray and Daren and Steve from Long Island for the pots and burners, The Lobsters, steamers, mussels, kielbasa, potatoes, corn and cole slaw were served, but first, we all had Steamy bowls of chowder to start. Coffee and Apple pie for dessert followed.
Again another spectacular camp fire, stories and laughter filling the air till the wee hours of the night..but only after Mother Nature put on a spectacular Lightning and Thunder show of her own first! It was Awesome!
Morning came quickly as I pulled in to the airport at 6:45 to see several hungry pilots looking at me with that "Is breakfast coming" look... so I went into action. Now, we were supposed to have fried clams the night before and frankly, you're truly forgot, so we had them for breakfast at our traditional "Steak and Egg" pilots breakfast. Many were surprised to see that the "Ham and Eggs" quickly changed to "Clam and Eggs" and with that, the feast began. Home fries and donuts were also on the table along with apple pies from the night before. One blueberry pie stayed in the club house. (Thanks Deb!) It was flyable in the am but the winds quickly began to build so with the food out of the way, we had plenty time to sit back and watch the Ultralights fly for awhile. It was also a great time to talk, snack, do motor maintenance, and why not, eat some more. A pizza buffet was served in the afternoon.
As the Boogie started to die down, so did the winds and we all flew for the last 2 hours of the day. It was a beautiful but chilly, September sunset.
I would be remiss if I didn't include a special thanks to the following individuals that helped make all of it such a sucessful event:
Thank you to....
To the good Lord for shining down on us again with great weather and safe flying!
The Beautiful Ladies of our Fly In that were so helpful: Sheila, Mary, Jen and Lisa. Thanks for your much needed and appreciated help in making this such a success.
Dana, our Boogie co coordinator for handling the logistics, finances and beverages.
Steve, Ray, Steve and Daren from L.I. who supplied plenty of pots and propane to make the clam bake happen.
Stan and Brendan for all the behind the scenes help.
Loren Baker and Daren (Dr. D.) for making the place beautiful.
Ziggy for his delicious corn and tomatoes.
Dana, Stan, Ziggy, Darren, Dimity, Bruce Brown and Alex Varv who feverishly worked to help get my motor running so I could fly too?and it workd and I flew!
All the others that I may have forgotten to mention, Thank You Too!
Highlights
Seeing smiling Joe D and a "thinner and trimmer" Gordon. Who will ever forget that famous "Gordon Take" off at last years Boogie!
Angelo's wild wing collapse: "My hands only shook after I landed"
Stan's "Trike Turtle": Always trying to out do Dave G
Dana's Para fan Demise: It flew great?for a short time anyways?
The Clam Bake: Lenny and Joes?eat your heart out
The Unexpected Arrival: Dean and company decide to "Drop In" on Sunday from Farmington "only 44 miles away" in their hang glider mosquitoes! What a sight!
The Camp Fires: Burning Wood, Cremora, upholstery and things a can't even mention...
No Accidents or Injuries: That's always a wonderful highlight!
Take care and Thanks for the Memories!
Respectfully Submitted,
Angelo

Angelo
Offers Some Sage Advice! (13 MAR 2006)
Angelo had a good day of flying today at Griswold, and had some
advice to offer us working stiffs. This advice can be viewed
HERE. Angelo may be self employed, but I take this advice to heart. As
the days get warmer, I have plans of Ebola, Bird Flu, and even hang nails
keeping me away from the office!

Salton Sea
'06! (19 FEB 2006)
Stanley, Scott, Daren and Steve made the trip to Salton Dea this year
for the big fly in. The event took place in Salton Sea, CA, from Feb 9th to the
12th, and was host to roughly 150 pilots. The scary pic above was our own
Stanley having a partial collapse during one of the events. His quick reflexes
ensured he got back on the ground safely but don't try this at home, kids! Stan
had borrowed my camera for the trip and came back with some great photos which
can be viewed HERE. The
event was sponsored by the folks at
Paratoys.com, please check out their site for future events as they
throw quite a party as you can see HERE.
Gah! my eyes!

Galleries are up! (19 FEB 2006)
Ken Gilbert has donated pics to be the first member to have a gallery
in our photos section. His shots of himself kiting can be found
HERE. I hope to have many more member galleries up as more members send
me photos they want to share with the world.

New Web Cam
Videos! (04 FEB 2006)
Angelo and I came up with the idea of using a Web Cam, and a laptop
computer to make in flight videos. It worked better than I had expected and the
videos can be seen HERE. I duct
taped the cam to the wing of a fixed wing ultralight, and the helmet of a
pilot, as well as the frame of my PPC.

UPDATE: The
Spring 2006 Boogie will be May 20-21. As in past years, this is the same
weekend as the
Hammonasset Kite Festival, always a treat to see from the air!
This may be the last Connecticut Boogie, at least at this location, as the
airport will likely close this summer, so don't miss out!
For info
Last Fall, we were
again blessed with great weather all weekend for the Boogie. It never got windy
enough to be unflyable, although most pilots took a break during mid day, at
least long enough to eat lunch.

Christmas Eve
2005, we Fly!
Dana,
Stanley, Angelo and Brendan braved the elements (actually, it was 50 degrees,
so there weren't too many elements to brave) and flew this Christmas Eve. I got
to take 2 Friends of Dimitri's up (Alan and Julie) as well as our own
PPG pilot, Dana Hague (He may never go back to PPG's). Click HERE to see all of the photos for the day.
Our Holiday,
2005 party is a Hit! (18 DECEMBER 2005)
Thank you to
Angelo, his wife Sheila and their daughter, Angela for hosting our Holiday
Party, as always! The party was at Angelos on Main in West Hartford, CT. They
can be reached online here. Angelo
did his reading of "Twas the Night Before Fly-In" to the delight of all
(Well not all, now Loren has new dirt on me...). The full text can be read
HERE.

Stanley Takes
Albuquerque! (1 OCT 2005)
Our own Stanley Kasica made the trip to New Mexico this year for the
Fly In and nearby Balloon Festival. Stan was joined by Scott Adair from our
group who was one of the judges. Stanley came in second, (barely) beaten only
by Eric Dufour. The results from the competitions can be found
HERE. Eric Dufour showed off his new toy, the XCitor, PPG/PPC
crossover. Click
HERE for more info. The hosts for this event were
Para Motor City, click for more information. There is a
picture of Stanley on the December 2005 copy of Ultraflight Magazine. Stanley
came back with quite a gallery, click
HERE to see.

Stanley on
Fire! (24 July 2005)

on fire... Success was achieved on 24 July, 2005. Click the image to see it

Ritchie
comes up to say Hi! (24 JULY 2005)
Renee and I were buzzing out over Clinton, enjoying the nice weather,
it was a great day to be flying. Renee says "Hey Look, it's Ritchie!".
Expecting to look over and see Ritchie a mile or two off, I was quite surprised
to see him about a stones throw away, waving to us. We got on the radio, and I
had him pose for a few pics. Click the pic below for a full sized shot.

Sheila's
first flight! (20 JUN 2005)
Today, Sheila Chirico, wife of fellow pilot, Angelo Chirico decided
to throw caution (and sanity) to the wind, and come fly with me. It was a nice
warm, calm day, she really couldn't have picked a better day for a first
flight. We made an hour long trip out along the beach, the Madison town parks,
and a few passes over the field before landing. She was a natural! Sheila took
to the air like a bird, and I am sure we will have many more flights together.
Angelo now buys all my beers in exchange for getting his wife hooked on flying.
A full set of pictures from the day can be found
HERE.
